i've gone a couple times on my $100 bike from big lots . . . which now has shifter problems and can't get to all of its gears. i'm looking at getting either a trek or a raleigh once i can afford it . . . they appear to be mostly the same except i like the shocks better on the raleigh and the shifters better on the trek.
my mind is like a steel trap! it only hangs on to the big stuff. visit my forums at track7.org

I have a mountain bike, a "Blue Streak", but I seldom use it for x-country stuff anymore. I do however see lots of mountain bikers on the mountains around here.
I live near Sugar Loaf Mountain, just west of Newcastle, and there are literally dozens of bike tracks in the section between the Freeway and the range. Some even lead down from the spine of the range, and I walk my dog up and down them as well.

I have a trek and a mongoose. I use the trek though. I usually go mountian biking locally. I know a few trails nearby. I do that at least once a week.
