looking 4 sum guides or sumthing that could teach me how to develop my OS. i have been using Computers sinse i was like 5, and after 8 years at it i have gotten pretty good, but now i wanted(just 4 personal acomplishment) to develop my own OS. I am quite good at HTML, CSS, and other things like that, but no C/C++, or anything of that sort, which seems to be needed for OS dev. but i do pick up on things quick and can learn it quick if you can point me to the right resources and guides/learning tools. Thanks in advance and good luck with all your own OS adventures.
P.S. Please dont respond if you are just going to say "you shouldn't even try" or "Insert any OS here is already better" |

Dudes, as opposed to saying "don't even try", I'm going to say "learn to code first". I supsect that none of you have the skills to do any more than rip off example OS code.

Sorry guys , but i have to agree with "gian" on this one you really should "learn to code first", you will C/C++ and some ASM, if your really interested in OS development. That said I'am no "OS DEV GURU", I want to code my own OS too.
But soon found I lacked certian skills..like C/C++ and ASM coding. So I am now in the process of learning said languages Here are a few sites that will be useful to you all OS dev sites http://www.azillionmonkeys.com/qed/os.html http://www.osdev.org/ http://visopsys.org/osdev/ C/C++, ASM sites http://www.thefreecountry.com/compilers/cpp.shtml http://nasm.sourceforge.net/ http://www.movsd.com/masm.htm free tutorials http://www.thefreecountry.com/documentation/onlinecpp.shtml http://www.intelligentedu.com/newly_researched_free_training/Assembly.html Feel free to email me at goa_so@yahoo.com.au {"It live's...it's alive --insert crazed scientists manaical laughter here--"}

OS Dever is an excellent resource for OS Dev stuff, but you'd better be really good at x86 Assembly and C (don't bother with cpp) before you try to code an OS. That is, learn to program, get some experience, have some fun with it. Later, when you've got some more experience, come back and try to write an OS.

I'd love to help out too! I've been working on something for about a month (and, not suprisingly it failed) and it would be a whole lot better if a team was working on it. I know a fairly large amount of c, a slightly less amount off c++, and a even lesser amount of asm. So, if anyone is still interested, let me know if i could help out!

You may have already heard of it, but there is a neat looking OS written entirely in assembly, even has GUI. It's called MenuetOS. This may give you some ideas I haven't tried it but it looks pretty cool. I don't remember the exact URL, just Google MenuetOS.org
