how much would a solid die-cast steel rectangle protruding 2 metres from a verticle wall, with a weight hanging from it bend in a hour period?
things needed to figure out: girder width= 20cm girder height = 45cm girder is 90 degress to the wall weight= 1510Kg's gravity= 9.8N temperature is a staggering 42 degrees celcius. Wall will not move, or crumble |

i won't be attempting this one since i had a class on this sort of thing and hated it
i'm confused by the units though: kg is a unit of mass, not weight . . . and N is a unit of force while gravity is usually expressed as an acceleration (m/s²

weight x gravity gives you Newtons

well mass x gravity does, but since it says weight in kg, then i guess that would work

do you know the answer to confirm? I'll pull out the physics book when i get back to school and do it, or ask my ME buddy to give me a hand if i get stuck...

temperature co-efficients on steel, and its strength/grade.
This is why I've never considered trying to answer the original, err question. A weight hanging @ what radius? Does this steel girder have any alloying or trace elements included within it's molecular lattice apart from carbon? Of course it does. They change everything. How much carbon anyway? The steel produced from a Bessemer Converter varies over a period of hours. Let alone "Puddled" steel.(single pour,-different batch) This changes the whole picture. This supposed girder is die-cast you say? What was the release agent used on the die? What was the temperature of the "Pour"? This will produce a "skin effect", -affects the outcome. What temperature was the die pre-heated to before pouring? What is the thickness of the die walls and the ambient temperature? Was the die force cooled to aid seperation of the product and impart extra tensile strength? How long were the microscopic seperations in the lattice produced during cooling at what temperature? Without this data the question is problemathical. -- ie. Bull Droppings. It's like asking how fast can a standard four cylinder car go if it's got fuel injection and a spoiler with 16 inch Mag wheels and a red paint job. *sigh* _B_
Beware the Big Koala. It originated the recursive malapropism when it found itself supernumerary to a specific task and commented, "I think I'm erroneous here". -which it wasn't until it said so, but then it was, -so it wasn't. It also once won a staring contest, with a stuffed cat.
