Anyone using BeOS nowadays? I've used it some time ago and found it fantastic, but it was in its beta stages at the time. Then Be the company stopped with BeOS, dunno the details but I believe there are some companies going further with developing it.

Yeah, I've played with BeOs and I think it rocks! It's still nowhere near a mac, but it played dvd's and my windows xp froze when I put a dvd into my dvd-rom drive. I just wish somebody would finish it's development and make some things like networking a little easier on it. If that happened I would pay for it.

The original BeOS from Be inc. was stopped. There are a few others who started over, and some of them are going commercial. Like YellowTAB which has made 'Zeta'. They are probably better with networking too. But there are more like OpenBeOS or BlueEyedOS. You can find more on BeUnited.org

i have a box set up next to my tv that's currently running a stripped-down version of win98 and is BARELY able to play movie files (it's a little old). maybe beos can do better for me . . .

It's worth a try.. beos is pretty good with media, and asks very little of the system. Just remember it is a windows installer :/ which installs beos on fat32 in a large sort of image file.
But you can (from within beos) format a beos partition and install/transfer beos to it. So deleting windows afterwards is possible.

I've heard the same thing: BeOS is loved by the people that use it.
