you've got to love an os that lets you be lazy and only type enough of the command so that it knows which one you mean

i think vms could have been huge but it never really took off. i curse vms weekly as it is not supported well by caché (a programming language that i use and support for work)

my mind is like a steel trap! it only hangs on to the big stuff. visit my forums at track7.org

it's an os that runs on vax and alpha computers. it was originally developed by digital, but they got bought out by compaq, and now it belongs to hp . . .

the full name is OpenVMS now, i guess. you could start at http://h71000.www7.hp.com/ for more info if you're interested

If only I had an Alpha/Vax. I heard somewhere that Alpha's (I think, might have been something else) were really good, my dad's an electrical enginner and he was talking about them to me.

yes, as far as i can tell the alpha architecture is pretty powerful, though i don't know nearly as much about it as i do for intel or motorola chips (i'm an electrical engineer and we covered intel and motorola in one of my digital classes). one of the customers i support for work runs a 3-server cluster on vms for their production system, and my university also ran vax servers with vms for e-mail and web hosting and such.
