You should be able to change them:
a quick 'how to' from this site The author writes... In your Control Panels folder, open the Monitors and Sound control panel. Then click on the Sound button. Under the Sound Monitoring Source dropdown box (in the lower right corner), select Built-in Mic if your Mac has one, or Sound In if you have a microphone plugged in to your Mac. Then, click on the Alerts button at the top of the window. Click Add..., clear your throat, press the record button and speak. You have ten seconds to record a sound. After you've spoken your peace (rim shot here), you can click the Play button to listen to your recording. If you like it, click the Save button. Give the sound a name and then it will appear in the Alerts window. By choosing it in the Alerts window, your new sound will become the Alert sound. If you wish to add a sound that someone else made, you need to know where these sounds live. So let's say someone gives you a sound. In order for you to use it as an alert sound you must place it in the System suitcase. First, close any applications running. Then, open your hard drive and open the System Folder. Locate your System suitcase (called System) and open it by double-clicking on it. Drag the sound your friend gave you into the suitcase window. Close all windows and you're finished. Note: The sound your friend gives you must be a System sound. Otherwise it must be converted.

Hi, again...
I should have been more specific...I want to change several sounds...not just one alert sound...when my computer starts up I want a different type of sound to when my computer shuts down...also when I open a program I want a different sound...the option so far is for only 1 alert sound...surely there is more then this to a Mac... I can create my own sound with the build-in mike ...no problemo...but using these sounds when I want to is an other matter... cheers DC |

You'll need something like Uli's Talking Moose then...
Oldy, but goldy... You can control your alerts with it, and even make it speak to you!
