What are some good free Mac OS-X antivirus programs? I can't seem to find any that are for the Mac. The key word here is FREE, I know of some that you have to pay for, but I am looking for a free one.

Thanks to anyone who has some input on this.

I wouldn't know of any good freeware antivirus programs for Mac... AFAIK, there are only good and complete shareware/payware softwares out there...

Thanks for the post on this daonlyfreez . so there are no "free" antivirus for the Mac, that's too bad. What are some of the shareware ones called so I can at least try them out? Or better yet, which one would be the best to use of them all?

Thanks for the info.

The two big anti-virus for mac software companies are:

Norton
McAfee Virex

There are some more, but these are the most used, I guess.

I personally prefer Virex, but that's mainly because I hate Norton (for Win, that is)...

Thanks allot. I will have to take a look at those. I actually have heard of both of them. I was just thinking that there might be a better antivirus that was just on the Mac and not made by a company that also makes a Windows antivirus.

But Viruses are Viruses and I guess you don't really need to specialize in just the Mac, especially when there are so few Mac viruses and the user base is smaller than that of windows.

But, thanks again for the info and the links.

Fortunately there are not many viruses around for Mac.

And... in approx. 15 years of working with Macs, I never had any... (well, ok the Gax-worm, but that is years ago, and it was very easy to remove)

If you have a good firewall, chances are very small you'll ever be infected... (it's not Windoze)

Yeah, in all 14 years of my life, and like another 5-7 years before that, my family has been using macs. Never got a single virus in that entire time. But dad still gets norton, anyways.

I dunno, I just found some:

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/154

http://www.icsalabs.com/html/communities/antivirus/macintosh/archives/macvirus/software/whichone.html

(scroll down for the free ones - not as comprehensive programs as a full antivirus program, though)

Sorry AC, thanks for the posting, but these freebies are a few programs that have been around for quite some time already and are only fixes against a couple of worms that were spreading around '96 probably.

If anyone finds a freeware for more recent Mac OSs (let's say 8.6+), please let us know

So are there any viruses? Bad ones, I mean? I'd really rather not get any. I don't have any security.

Fortunately, there are not many around for Mac...

But, if you want to be on the safe-side, I'd recommend Virex...

different peron asking. With Mac OSx, how can I check to make sure my firewall is secure and should I just bite the bullet and buy Virex? I really do not want a virus after going through hell on a PC with Windows.

Here is info on how to configure the built in firewall in OS X

And I found these nice ones for reading:

Apple 'irrelevant'?

I guess not

Forget Norton, or forget any anti-virus for Mac OS X, you don't need them...

But if you must, go Virex

I installed Virex 7.5 and removed it ASAP. It really caused more problems than it fixed. Made my iMacG5 1.8 run like crap. I should have done some reading as now I am seeing there is a problem with it.
