That's not precisely true. Matter can be created and destroyed. What the above statement mean is that you can't make something out of nothing or unmake something where not a single atom would exist. Matter are created and destroyed when they are transform from one matter to another, so that the properties have changed. When you break down matter when it loses certain atoms, then the original matter is destroyed. Some of it turn into energy, usually heat.

The question is, What was before the universe? the universe is the only thing that exists, were all part of it but we all think we and our thoughts are sepperate from it. There is neither a beginning to it nor an end to the universe.
