I guess they are ok if a person doesn't want extra things like php and perl and such things as those. But I can't imagine any real webmaster wanting to host on yahoo unless they were definitely not able to find something else?...

True Yahoo sucks... most free hosting thats still commercial (what I mean is overbearing banners and AD's) usually isn't a good deal: too many restrictions, not enough space, no scripting and worst of all no FTP (those are my experiences from freeservers). I've only got a 50megs account cause I _need_ hosting thats free, with a short URL.
I found a cool domain united.kg.net that atleast allows FTP and only asks for a >tiny< link to their main site and it allows ftp... they keep promising PHP+MySQL etc but it doesn't come..... i.e. "We are currently reconstuction our MySQL so just wait"... but overall its a decent host.

it's prolly good for personal sites though by beginners or webmasters who aren't really particular about features...but no ftp? that sucks! i remember browser upload and it takes a LOT longer and is more tedious...no resume too... :|

I agree. The free host is upseting, the file manager is really unorgainized, and the easybuilder is too easy for lamers who just want to make a page for no reason. So many restrictions, I don't know anyone who uses it without the easy builder.
And the paid host, they're just hopin the people who already use yahoo email, shoping, etc, will want convineince and stick with them for other things too.

lol, i hate browser upload...they used to have ftp upload for the free version but they took it out because they people to pay. can you imagine that? and the worst part is getting time outs. sheesh! 8(

When I had my site there, upload wasn't too bad because it was only a few files at a time. But on any host, if they only have file upload, it is extremely annoying, unless of course they let you unzip an archive there and the files be put into place automatically.

Its been such a long time since I used geocities, can't even remember how the FTP was. probably the most annoying thing on the free hosting, to me anyway, are those ads.

yup! it's so tedious to have to upload one by one then move them to subdirectories afterwards. i mean, why can't they upload directly to the folder you want? 8(

Yeah, geocities sucks. You hardly get any bandwidth, and the pay hosting is so insane it isn't even funny. One really good free host that I have found, (good as free hosts go, at least), is www.freepgs.com. If you put a link to them, this is what you get.

Storage: 50 MB
Scripting/DB: PHP, SSI, MySQL
Upload Via: Browser or FTP
Bandwidth: 4.5 GB/mo

No ads, either. You only get one MySQL DB, but that doesn't seem to be a problem. Not for me, anyways.

The host I use right now is as-hosting, which I'm content with right now. I get 150 mb, i'm not sure how much bandwidth, but its been more than enough during the recent slight growth of visitors to the site, 10 mysql databases, I'm not sure how many mail accounts, a few ftp accounts, and some other things like that. My site now only takes up about 30 mb, but I like the extra space, because I like storing programs which I'm working on, on my site, so that people can see the source code if theyw ant or the application itself. I'll probably be with them till there is a reason not to be that search for a free host is so very annoying. Either you have to have so many forum postings, or they put ads on your site (I refuse to use any like that), or there is only a few hundred mb of bandwidth!, or they don't allow mysql databases, or whatever else. This host I'm with has very few downtimes, and when there is one it is short, so I figure one or two a month isn't bad if it only lasts a few minutes to a few hours.

Yahoo! is not going to lower their webhosting prices as long as people are still buying from them. Also, some people do not trust webhosting only companies because they fear that they may go out of business and they trust Yahoo! because of its Fortune 500 status.

i forgot. you can check out www.cx.ro and check out their hosting. you only get one db and php too and 100 mb i think but i don't know about the quality of hosting just yet because i never tried it but the featiures sounded good.
