I don't know if this is the right forum, but since im using windows 2k i'll post it on windows forum :P

Anyone know how to redirect the Kazaa port to use 80 or any other port instead of 1214? Even a website describing how to do it would help

IMO you are wasting your time with Kazaa.

Anyhow, there is an option in kazaa that can fix this.. scroll thru
the options and you will find an option to pick the port number
you wont be able to use 80 or 21 or any defult ports
sucessfully tho

the best answer is don't use kazaa. they're blocking it because it's taking up too much bandwidth (i'm guessing you're at a university or at work). changing the port may not be enough, but if you can actually do that then just pick some number and it'll probably be just as good as anything else

Or find people online who can e-mail you the songs and have them use KaZaa. That's what I did until my sister downloaded it, then I figured I might as well use it myself.

Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.

Try KaZaa Lite - It's much more reliable, and doesn't have banner and pop up ads. It's best feature is it's completely devoid of spyware!

There is another program out there that is very similar to Kazaa. It's called Ares (it's available at http://www.softgap.com/) It has basically the same interface as Kazaa, but it creates partial files that end in whatever extension they would have (so a partial movie file would be a .avi file for example) which is rather annoying if you dl pictures as the picture viewer will try to display it. In any case, it hasn't been blocked on college campuses as far as I know.

Yes, it's true, Ares is a really great program, but some college campuses DO block the software.

You can redirect Kazaa lite++ to use port 80, at least you can if you are using v2.4.3 !

The one thing I would like some feedback on though is in regard to securiy.

What with those bastards w/ the RIAA going after people for not buying their $20.00 CD's (rip).

Will using port 80 prevent you from being fingered by your ISP as a Kazaa user ?

I had heard that ISP's were being forced to cooperate with the RIAA in investigations, and that using standard kazza ports was a dead giveaway.

port 80 is blocked by most cable companies because it's the standard port for an http server, so if you set kazaa to use that port it may not work at all for incoming connections. i've never used kazaa, so i don't have answers to the rest of your questions.

The only thing I can think of is trying HTTP tunnel, I've managed to get that working in college, you have to pay for it though and theres no way I could get out of paying so I only had it for a week or something

If your sysop is employing the solution of simply runing a HTTP proxy server on some obscure port (say port 52719 TCP) and ponting browser to it. Then, limiting *all* other ports on your network and pointing a browser to port the proxy port ... then you're screwed.
This is the workaround for Kazaa's sneaky tendency to first try port 1214 ... then if not available Kazaa goes for any port in the 1000 to 4000 range ... and then if blocked on those ... goes to port 80 (http) ... blocking which would grind users to a halt. Hence the proxy server on some left field port.

So, for those folks trying to get around blocked ports on a network with kazaa ... goto options and select the 'make port 80 available' option ... it's the least likely to be blocked.
