I have to say that I think genres of music are there to help the buyer rather than completely describe a style of music... I'm also inclined to go for something maybe more rock-orientated but with songs like Aerosmith/Run DMC "Walk This Way", Anthrax/Public Enemy, there are a lot of acts doing musical genre cross-breeding. I think you can only judge an artist/act/performer/singer on the song they do!!!
Ministry's first album (for example) was an elctro-pop extrvaganza (no sign of rock there) a few years later they were making albums with some of the heaviest rock sounds imaginable... Again, Massive Attack are kinda slow/melancholic break-beat act, however they use rap elements/rock guitars/various ethnic instruments and more... I think it's difficult to dismiss a genre because that's the genre (???) they've been marketed as!

Where as im more partial to classic rock..
Bad Company Lynyrd Skynyrd ZZ Top Mr Big Fleetwood Mac Jimi Hendrix Pink Floyd I didnt think Jonny Lang was rock. Considering he was singing blues some time back. I do enjoy matchbox 20, and Creed. I listen to anything depending on my mood. well most anything

Yeah, I thought it was just plain wrong to mix some of the genres that they have mixed. As for Jonny Lang, it really depends on the song but I think that he fits more into rock than blues. ZZ Top rules

Rock today seems to be anything that isn't anything else that has guitars featured prominantly. What's funny is when you go to a place that has a seperate section for hard rock and seeing not only who they put in there, but also who they left out.

What about bands like Stuck Mojo, Splyt, Killswitch Engage, Iced Earth, Dillinger Escape Plan, Shadows Fall, Sworn Vengance, Lamb of God, Bane, and Burn Your Wishes? Ever even heard of any of them?

Stay up one Saturday night and watch Headbangers Ball. Good stuff. But it's two videos and a set of commercials, so have something else you can watch at the same time.

That's the whole reason I watch. I've pretty much stopped watching for the videos and flip to it, see if I like the song, and wait around for the band name if I do.

Well has anyone heard the latest Metallica album? "St. Anger"..???
I think it's pretty awesome. I know it's had a lot of stick because of the production (which I love - sounds raw and crushing, more like garage punk sound than metal) and shock, horror they are past it! Blah blah blah... They still seem to wanna do something that's their own and not go over the same safe water over and over again!!! 8-)

the heavy weights of the past still seem to be around but I dont see any new talent that can level with the one that has been around for quite some time......
let's face it rock is dying and pretty soon we will only have cds to remember it.....

It's more that the good bands aren't getting exposed, which is another reason I love to download stuff. The Underground Scene has a bunch of downloads from basically not mainstream bands. Go check some of them out.

I don't think that rock is dying. It is simply mutating. Compare Korn and the Rolling Stones. They are both in the same genre (supposedly) and yet they are like country and rap to eachother. And country has seemed to be dying for the last fifty years but it is still around.
