I installed Mandrake 10.1 on a virtual machine,
installation went ok, but after rebooting it gave out black screen with this:

Mandrakelinux release 10.1 (official) for x.586
Kernel 2.6.8.1-12mdk on an i686 /tty1
localhost login:

after i punch in my user name, it gives out: [username@ localhost username]$

what command is it waiting for ?

that's a command prompt -- it's waiting for whatever command you want to give it. it's similar to booting to DOS

my mind is like a steel trap! it only hangs on to the big stuff. visit my forums at track7.org

Assuming you installed an X server, "startx" will load the gui.
