I think Caldera or Open Linux would be a good Server to use if your a n00b. There are a lot of options you can choose durring installation and it would let you configure them afterwards with ease. Or atleast thats my oppinion. I think it would work well on your computer aswell.

Most NIX servers have SSH installed, otherwise get it on www.openssh.com and install it, I assume u own the linux server?

And from your WinXP once u got the SHH running on your NIX then go to
www.ssh.com and install the free ssh client for winduze in order to access your nix box.

www.ssh.com

Or you can use winscp and putty.

ssh/VNC would be your best bet. SSH comes with every linux distro, VNC can be downloaded from http://www.tightvnc.org/

VNC will allow you to remotely control the graphical portion of your linux machine, so if you're looking to get an X gui from another machine, even a windows one, then VNC is the way to go. If you dont mind using the command line only, then SSH is your program. Either way, you will be able to remotely access your linux machine, and make configuration changes. Hope this helps!

Yes, of course, you can use VNC too as Accident said.

.oO(Why not just stick learnin nix heartfully rather than migrating your winduzeeee skillz? )

LOL, some people cant really live without the taste of winduze booze. =o/

there's one system at home where i have no monitor installed.
The system's running a Debian and Apache/NFS/SMB/SSH/Webmin installed.
For me, other than using SSH and VNC, there're a few other way to access the system to modify things inside as well. Of course the best is SSH/VNC but you can try Webmin too. It's a centralized web-based configuration tool for almost everything inside your Linux box. Try it.

i'd use SSH, then you'll get to learn linux a bit better too, not just point and click.

putty and x-win32(the demo is free) is 'the' way to connect, you don't carry all the weight
of a full desktop (even on a lan vnc is slow) on linux, vnc is very touchy anyway.
x-win is a 'thin client' and will run x-based applications from the command line, after you have properly configured both the sever and xwin. over putty (using shh of course) it is reasonably secure. Though running a x server on the internet has it's concerns
have fun

the ends equal the means
