eAnthology - adware?

I was trying to find out if there's any new spyware-detection software available when I ran into something called eAnthology. It was supposed to be a spyware removal software and maybe it is too, but I though it was behaving strangely during install (too many guestions, too many pop-ups...) so I got suspicious, stopped it and scanned with ad-aware instead. And oh yes, this eAnthology had added things all over the registry and other places too ad-aware classified it as a data-miner. Luckily it was easy to remove compared to some others I've seen...

I searched a bit and found out that it is in fact working software against other adware but nevertheless it is itself a spyware

This crap is getting too far, soon people don't want to use free software anymore and then it will be Ms everywhere...

Chaos reigns within - Reflect, repent, and reboot - Order shall return

Spyware/Ad-ware is a damn piece of shit.

There are so many poorly built and spyware freeware applications, that I don't use freeware much anymore. That's the problem with freeware/open-source, they have no motivation to make it good. The more open-source we get, the free software will become worse, and much worse.

A guy gets on a bus and starts threatening everybody: "I'll integrate you! I'll differentiate you!!!" So everybody gets scared and runs away. Only one person stays. The guy comes up to him and says: "Aren't you scared, I'll integrate you, I'll differentiate you!!!" And the other guy says: "No, I am not scared, I am e to the power of x."

I agree that spyware sucks. That said I love OpenSource software. I run Linux, use Mozilla Firefox as my browser, PDFCreator is on every MS machine I own, and I use Thunderbird as my email reader.

There is a BIG difference between OSS (OpenSource Software) and freeware. OSS can be used, modified, and distributed by anyone. Freeware can only be used by anyone. Freeware is where you see most of the spyware problems because the authors/programers are creating the software usually with a profit motive and then bundle in the crap to pay for it.

If an OSS programmer did that anyone could look at the sourcecode and re-release it without the spyware. Also, there is usually a motivation with OSS to make the programs good. They are usually created to help the programmer. That means they are running the software, and they don't want it slowing down or crashing their machine.

Anyway, off my rant. I just think that good OSS programmers (including the people at Redhat, SuSe, Mozilla, Debian and Mandrake (I know not all of them are orgs, but they all consist of talented people creating great OSS)) deserver some recognition and to not be lumped together with eAccelleration, Gator, and the like.

This "virus and spyware cleanup" software is in fact sort of virus or malwar/spyware itself. It has really screwed up my computer, and the "uninstall" program the site provides actually just makes the problem worse. These people should go to jail for life !

Yes - Eanthology is really bad stuff - among other things it somehow embedded itself in my SOPHOS software and now the SWEEPSRVSYS process has taken over all the CPU (constantly takes 85-99%) so my computer is unusable.

Only use real "virus and spyware cleanup" software, don't be fooled by popups telling you you are infected and need this supa-dupa program immediately. They indeed themselves are foistwares, don't be such fools.

Check out the other postings in this thread for links to real anti-foistware programs, many of which are free

Since I can't see any posted links in this particular thread and to save daonlyfreez from doing it yet again.

Try this personal firewall for free
OutpostInstall.exe

--another reliable freebie which I use is
Spybot Search and Destroy

Spybot together with adaware from Lavasoft (the other good freebie) look after my system while it's surfing. Adaware Link
Install these on a clean system, -update regularly.
Back up your data religiously and then just ENJOY the NetSurf. _B_

Beware the Big Koala. It originated the recursive malapropism when it found itself supernumerary to a specific task and commented, "I think I'm erroneous here". -which it wasn't until it said so, but then it was, -so it wasn't. It also once won a staring contest, with a stuffed cat.

How do you successfully remove eAnthology without harming your computer.
Any answers. Someone here said it's easy to remove, but didn't give instructions
as to how to rid it.
