My SO swears by 3-D Studio Max. I thought Poser was decent but apparently the in-school techs these days scoff at that program. I only work with 3D for Sims skinning though so this opinion should be taken with a grain of salt.

Ofcourse 3DsMax! But it is not cheap.. lol. And Poser is mainly for characters, great program also if you want to render humans!

I like blender http://www.blender.org/ and povray http://povray.org/.
People say blender is hard to use, because it's not easy to use as TrueSpace (another good one, but I think it's hard to use), but if you learn how to tweek the settings with blender and mess with the lights you can make good looking stuff. Though povray is hard to use in a way. It's code base. There are molders that can ouput to povray though. Povray is best (quality of what you can do, not using it) at lest that what I used. I haven't been able to try the top two known 3d software 3d max and maya yet, but people tell me there good. |

Personally I will recommend Maya, but its depends on what you want to do. I suggest you to learn from PLE (Personal Learning Edition) and and see what you like the best.

There is no Best 3d application, although some will argue one app over another. All the major 3d apps do about the same thing.its all down to what you do with it. You can do just about anything you want with just about any 3d program out there, some just make certain things easier.
The list up there by belladonna is real good. I use 3ds max, I like it a lot. I would say it's the best, but that's just because I use it. Maya is also good, one of the best out there. Softimage is also real good, steep learning curve. Lightwave, is not bad, I don't like the separation of the "Modeler" and "Animator" work spaces. you have to switch between the 2. And Cinema 4D, I personally don't like this one much, it seems to have the least features. All of these applications are not chap at all. And there is a slew of other cheaper ones. some listed above, like Strata.just use what suites you needs best.

From my experience, 3DSM is the best. But Bryce is also pretty good. Go download some trial versions and mess around and find out yourself is all I can say!

If you want an OK Animator look at Animation Master from Hash.com Yes, I will say this right away, it is not the best out there and it seems Hash support is kina rude to customers, but there are forums out there that are extreamly helpful. The price tag is $299, or $199 if you buy it at a computer show like I did. Look at the stuff you can do with AM and decide. The biggest drawback, I think, is it's non ability to transfer rendered images to games like Lightwave and Bryce are able to. You can create Toy Story like and better animation, as well as real life renders. For the price, you really cannot complain....maybe.
Some people get the Elevator while others get the shaft.
