Ok, this might be a stupid question but, i have a spot on my motherboard where there looks like there should be an AGP port but there isn't. There is a spot the size of an agp port and there are 2 screw holes but no AGP port connector. Not sure if there is a part i can buy and install myself that would let me use the agp port or not.
Its just that in school i heard that just about every computer comes with an AGP port nowadays and my computer is only 2 years old. So i don't see why my computer wouldn't have an AGP port. Specs: Dell Dimension 2400 P4 3.06 HT 512 MB ram |

short answer is that if you don't already have an agp slot on your motherboard, you can't use an agp card with that motherboard.
agp is actually starting to be obsolete as pci express becomes more common. my computer is a few years old and uses agp -- i've never actually dealt with pci express so i'm not sure how to tell if you have that or not. one common thing with with pre-built systems (like a dell) is to have video built in to the motherboard, and that very well may be agp video regardless of whether the motherboard has an agp slot. about trying to add an agp slot to your motherboard, you might be able to find a connector somewhere and solder it on there, but even if you manage to do that and not ruin the motherboard, there's more to it than just the connector so it likely won't work anyway.

yeah thats what i figured. I just thought i would ask to see if i was wrong LOL. One more question though, if my computer came with an graphics controller such as the Intel(R) 82845G\GL\GE\PE\GV could that be using an AGP port? And if it is could i remove it and replace it with a different graphics card or is the graphics controller build into the motherboard?
BTW thanks for the responce. |

as far as i know, that graphics controller is always on the motherboard, and intel seems to confirm that

About your computer -- there's no hope.
On your motherboard, Dell has taken out the AGP slot for no room to expand - unless you perform a motherboard upgrade through Dell itself. You're gonna have to stick with the Integrated Graphics, unfortunately. If you're really serious about getting a better video card.. look for a PCI slot card.. it's your only choice. Or get a new computer. The Dimension 2400 is a budget minded PC, perfect for word processing and web browsing...but not for gaming..
