I have a 512mb Supertalent USB 2.0 flash drive where 212mb of its storage is reporting being used by invisible files. Norton says the FAT is mismatched. Formating and DiskDoctor do not help. Is there some Flash Drive utility program out there?

In addidition to what it says above, Norton DD consistantly finds the FAT mismatch problems and seems to clear space up (10megs) every time I rerun the Disk Doctor. It takes about 12 minutes for each run through DD to clear just 10 megs up and there must be an easier way.

Well it seems many were stumped by this but FEAR NOT! I have found the answer. It seems that some Jump drives automaticaly (From the factory) have 1/2 of their space allocated into a protected space. I never bother with utility programs but this time, I couldn't stand having only half my flash Drive working while I knew something was using the other half. The hardware's security utility program came with its own format program along with options to turn up or down the amount of space kept in a secure location. The security feature was only changeable using their home grown software. This still does not explane how I was able to DL 117MB of files off my work XP home yet my wife's XP wanted to format it. It may have something to do with me installing the wrong drives in the first place. I was under the presumption that since my MB Hardware could only use 1.1 USB that I only could use the 1.1 Drivers. This and not knowing the exact version of my flash drive (There were three versions) most likely lead to all tbe problems listed above. I am now the proud owner of a fully usable 512MB flash drive.

Maybe this has something to do with admin-rights? XP is very strict about this... If you want to mount more then 5 network-drives (whether they are removeables or network), if you don't have admin-rights, it won't mount...
And you might want to get rid of Norton (Norton s*cks...) Greetings, daonlyfreez

The drive was working perfectly a few days back and then BOOM! My Win XP machine detects the drive when it is attached; proceeds to identify it as a security device; instals the software from the CD and then cannot locate the device.
GOD HELP US ALL! Someone out there in cyberspace please respond! |

And so I hope that there is an Einstein somewhere. My drive stopped working too. There is a drive letter in XP explorer, but FAT is unknown, size is unknown, all is unknown. And the Flash drive let keeps burning red. Like a traffic sign!

used space 0 bytes 0 bytes free space 0 bytes 0 bytes error checking doesn't do a thing format doesn't do a thing actually nothing does a thing Who mighty guru knows the answer? Can I somehow get back my data. After trying dozens of software packages: still nothing! |

In certain conditions which are difficult to reproduce, USB Flash drive may suddenly stop working properly and begin to present itself to Windows XP as "Security device", prompting for drivers which are not normally required. It is possible to restore drive's functionality, but unfortunately any existing information on it will be lost.
Here is the recovery procedure: Download Canyon EZ Recovery utility (http://www.canyon-tech.com/files/Canyon/USB-Flash/Plastic/EZ_Recover_CANYON_2570.zip) and USB Flash Tools (http://www.canyon-tech.com/files/Canyon/USB-Flash/Plastic/PL15UtilV10030.exe) Install both packages, reboot and run EZ Recovery tool Plug USB flash device into USB port and press Recover button Wait until process completes (it is possible that error message will be displayed at the end, ignore it and continue) Unplug the device and plug it back again as prompted Start USB Flash Tools, leave password field empty and press OK Press "Format" button and wait until process completes Exit from service utility and use your USB Flash drive normally |

I will say this: The Super Talent Flash Drive (USB memory stick) that I had a problem with was my own. Though I thought I down loaded the correct driver for it, I found out it was not. This was causing one OS to miss read and miss write to the drive while another worked to figure out the mess the other did. In short, the 512 is a lost cause. these pen drives, flash USB's memory sticks, whatever, were never designed to be treated in exactly the same mannor as we would a floppy or Hard Drive. Many specialized programs are designed to work with their USB pen drive counterparts and should NOT be inter mixed. I found out I needed a Generic 98se USB reader from Super Talent Flash in order to have a smooth working pen drive. I did all the things you did AC and it caused my 512mb pen drive to bite the dust....Using common formating and utilities is second to flashing the hardware data on the pen drive itself, rendering it useless.

I've had same problem too. But I use 2 OS on my computer: Win Me and XP.
With XP: used space 0 bytes 0 bytes free space 0 bytes 0 bytes error checking doesn't do a thing format doesn't do a thing actually nothing does a thing switch to WinMe: still recognised normally->format it and back to XP->everything is OK After a few times using it, it sometimes met old poblem too. I redo all processes above twice or three times, and now it reached new problem: it becomes...ROM??? -Both OS recognize my Flash drive normally with data I wrote last time. But I can't delete it, can't copy file to it, and can't format it. The logo of Flash Drive is MyFlash(128MB, manufactor: E-Data). It has no write-protected but when I want to copy or delete, message appear "...write protected..." Is old and new problem related? and solution? Sorry for my poor English. |

error checking doesn't do a thing > What program do you use?
format doesn't do a thing > What Program do you use to do this? Im seeing that you have used the Windows Format program? Or the Windows Error checking on the flash drive? Ill say again...Using common formating and utilities is second to flashing the hardware data on the pen drive itself, rendering it useless. Like my old 512, I was able to read it but...thats it. The formatting and scanning killed it. Perhaps that is your situation.

Ditto. Glad to see it works. Hey A.C. GoodOnYer for having the good manners yourself, to post both your now-sorted situation and your thanks to the A.C. who helped with the links.

I wonder if the on board ROM you have on the usb memory stick has a default allocation of space. Also, I'll still hold on to the danger that the USB stick may be damaged from all the formatting. If not, Im glad Im wrong an you could fix it. Just be careful.

Hi all...
I have the same problem as described above. Instead of USB disk, Win XP recognizes my Canyon 128 MB as new security device. Recovery tool doesn't work... Any idea? Are these problems just with Canyon or is it a common problem with USB disks? Thanks, Psycho_S. |
